Meet Jessica Cohen Mazun of J Mazun Jewelry
tell us about your products. where they are made. who makes them. favorite product features.
Chicago based, handmade, all natural gemstone jewelry designed with sophistication and edge for everyday wear.
tell us about your connection to Chicago. your neighborhood.
I currently reside in Rogers Park, but have spent 10+ years in the Andersonville and Uptown areas. I have worked many years in the West Loop area and love how the area has turned into what it is today.
what do you love about your business, your industry.
I love creating new designs and taking inspiration from other designers. I try not to design for the masses, but create unique pieces that come from my inside me.
tell us about your design inspiration - space, smells, colors, textures.
Architecture has always been an inspiration for me. Good bones, detailed and well though out composition, and attention to color drive my designs. Growing up in Chicago and studying art history and architecture at a collegiate level has enabled me to be exposed to some of the best design in the world. In addition, I love to find the balance of minimalism and ornate design to create something unique to me.
what advice do you have for other creative entrepreneurs?
Just do it. Create from the heart and design from the soul. Not everyone will love everything you make, but that doesn't matter. It it feels right...keep going.
share a favorite quote, a mantra.
“To each their own.”
surprise us with your secret talent, fact, etc.
I'm a reiki practitioner.
what's the most common question you get about your business?
Where do to you get your beads from?
tell us about your process for making + creating.
First, I completely cover my table with all of my beads. Then I choose several bags of beads, minding the color/texture palette. I stare at them for a little bit and then start to arrange them on my board. Next thing I know, I'm stringing along, adding tassels and pendants. Sometimes I use designs that I jotted down in a notebook, other times, I will create on the spot.
name 3 local makers/brands that inspire you and why.
Do-Rite Donuts: Not much to say here...everyone loves serious donuts. Koval Distillery: Koval is a simple organic distillery on a quiet Ravenswood corner. Owned and operated by a couple who left their careers as doctorate level educators to open their establishment. They have also helped numerous other distilleries open across the nation, sharing their skills.
what is the best advice you've ever been given and how has it shaped you and your business?
"You don't have to do everything at once". When I first started designing jewelry, I wanted to sell in every store, online, every craft show....anywhere I could. I had to learn to slow down and really learn one thing at a time. You need to build your foundation and then build upon that. Rome wasn't built in a day and don't get discouraged.
