What do you love about your business and industry?

Making and selling candles has been a growing industry. What I love about Flicker is being able to provide a luxury candle with personality. Doing shows and meeting new people is always enjoyable. Being able to offer different kind of decals for my clients to personalize their candle jar at these shows, creates a connection with my business and my clients. They are able to show a little bit of themselves that will be showcased in their homes.

Tell us what inspires you.

When I was younger, my parents owned a Chinese restaurant. Every day after school and on weekends my sister and I would go and help the business out. At that time, of course, I was not fond of working when my friends got to hang out after school. Looking back, I am ever so grateful for those moments, because I am who I am with those experiences. My parents, who barely spoke any English at that time, managed to build a business while building great relationships with their customers. My parents are such hard-working honest individuals, and they have instilled that mentality into us. Started out with nothing, but managing to own their own business - it's pretty amazing. My parents are my inspiration in working hard and pushing myself to accomplish what I want in life, while being an honest good individual. With all the life experiences, I am inspired to build my own business, providing an honest good quality product for people to enjoy.

What advice do you have for other creatives and entrepreneurs?

The advice I have for entrepreneurs starting out is to always believe in yourself and your product. You might have a couple of slow years in the beginning and want to call it quits, but always push yourself to be better. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there.

What is something surprising about you?

I have a degree in Elementary Education and although I did not follow that path, I do miss interacting and working with children. I am fortunate enough to be able to substitute teach part-time.

What is the most common question you get about you and your business?

Do I really make all my products? The answer is yes! Nothing beats a handmade item. Everything is made with love in my home.

Tell us about your process for making and creating.

It all starts with researching the best wax, best wood wicks, and premium fragrance oils out there. Picking the right oils, that are free of other harsh chemicals is so important. It's easy to make a candle, but it is difficult to make a GREAT candle. Candle-making is basically melting the wax and putting in your oils. The key is the formula, ratio, and temperature to make your candle burn the best it can. Flicker does not include any additives to enhance the candles performance. All natural and simple.

Name three local makers and brands that you are inspired by and why.

1. Mandy, the owner of Glazed Pottery Shop: Mandy is an old co-worker and seeing someone who has so much talent, striving to build her business is inspiring. Knowing someone and going through similar paths is also a motivation as much as it is an inspiration.

2. Sue, the owner of Seize The Bead: Sue was my first neighbor at my very first craft show. She gave me so much insight on the crafting industry. She informed me of all the ups and downs and gave amazing advice. She provided me with further information on events and shows to grow my business. Sue has an amazing handmade business that is growing every year. She inspires me that the handmade industry can make a full time career.

3. John, the owner of Pop Can Jewelry: John and I met at Mount Prospect Farmers Market. Him and his wife are such wonderful people who work hard and believe in their products. Seeing how much their company has grown over the years, inspires me that a handmade business can be successful.

What is the best advice you've ever been given and how has it shaped your business?

My husband and sister have been my biggest support system. On a daily basis, they don't give me advice, but the moral support to keep me going is better than physical word advice. They support my decisions on my business and just being there for me in this journey is everything to me. This has made me believe in myself and my company and to keep growing as a person and as a business.

If you are using wood wick, it is natural, but aren't you killing more trees?

Our wooden wicks are made from native, sappy fruit trees. They are sourced from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified mills and manufactured in the USA. Non treated. Natural. All. The. Way.
