Meet Emily Shinnick of Locked and Layered
Tell us about your products.
I am the local designer or the jewelry line. I make and design everything. I do work with some vintage and found material.
Tell us about your connection to Chicago.
I was born and raised in Lincoln Park. I grew up and lived most of my life on the Northside of Chicago.
What do you love about your business?
I love creating and designing a Men's / Unisex jewelry line. Jewelry is a failrly saturated market but I love focusing on men's jewelry because it's not as tapped into and it's fun to create an androgynous line that represents me and my style.
Tell us about your design inspiration.
Growing up in Chicago I've always been fascinated by industrial objects and architecture. I would pass by the Finkle Steel company and would stare into the open doors of the factory amazed by the rawness of everything. It's hardness and imperfections always seemed to fascinate me. I became more interested in architecture after taking a boat tour with the architectural foundation on the river. Growing up in Chicago and seeing these buildings all the time can definitely be overlooked. But once you understand their stories and focus on the details it started to look like a whole new city to me.

Tell us about your process for making + creating.
I stick to a very minimal approach. I sketch out ideas, repurpose old material, and try to have a cohesive balance to my collections.
